How does it work?
The government is rewarding consumers who want to give up their old gas-guzzlers for new, more fuel-efficient cars. Based on the differential of fuel-economy between your old car and the new VW you have your eye on, you could be in line for a credit worth up to $4500.

How is a credit different than a trade-in?
Unlike a trade-in where the value of your old car is put towards the purchase of a new car, a credit is money from the government to help you pay for a new, greener, more fuel-efficient VW. In exchange, your old car will be destroyed as part of a national effort to remove low mileage vehicles from circulation.
