The campus sits on 750 acres off Poinsett Highway, it has a traffic circle that catches out-of-town visitors on their first loop, and visitor parking is genuinely small. If you're driving in from anywhere in the Upstate, you'll want a car that handles that without stress, and then you'll want something left in the day after the tour.
The 2026 Volkswagen Jetta is a natural fit here, and not because it's the flashiest choice. It's the right-sized one. At 70.8 inches wide, it slips into compact campus lots without the white-knuckle reverse that a full-size SUV demands. The EPA rates the 1.5-liter turbo at 29 city and 40 highway, so the Upstate roads between Greenville and Travelers Rest sit well within one tank's comfortable range. Trunk space runs 14.1 cubic feet, which handles a day bag, a camera, and the layers a shaded lakeshore walk in October actually requires.
Because the Jetta is a sedan, its trunk doesn't fold flat. That's one tradeoff worth naming up front.
If you're the family that travels with a stroller or a gear-heavy crew, that matters. For two or three people on a focused day trip it's plenty, and the 37.4 inches of rear legroom means even a tall college-age rider arrives comfortable rather than crumpled.
What's the route?
The route is three stops and roughly 20 miles of driving, with natural breaks built in, running north on US 276 West, also called Poinsett Highway, to Furman, then back south into Downtown Greenville, and finishing wherever the day takes you. You won't cover much ground, but you'll want the whole day.

Stop by stop
Stop 1: Furman University (plan 2.5 to 3 hours)
Get there early, because guided tours at Furman run on select weekdays at 9:00 am and 1:30 pm, according to Furman's admissions portal, and spots fill quickly in fall open-house season. Confirm your time at furman.edu first.
The campus address is 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613. Furman's own directions page notes that some GPS systems won't navigate you all the way there on Poinsett Highway, so plug in the address and verify the route before you go. When you reach the front gate, travel halfway around the main traffic circle, look for signs, and turn right just before the Hartness Admissions Center. That small visitor lot in front of the building is your target. If it's full, the Daniel Music Building lot is the first right off the main traffic circle when you enter the gate.
After the official tour, don't leave. A 1.5-mile paved loop around the campus lake is one of the better short walks in the Upstate. The Florentine Bell Tower sits on a peninsula at the lake's edge, and the carillon holds 60 bells cast in Holland. The rose garden is worth a few minutes, and so is the Japanese Peace Garden (the Hei-Sei-Ji temple, reassembled here piece by piece from Nagoya, Japan). None of this takes long, but it changes the campus from an abstract ranking to a real place.
The Jetta GLI is worth a thought here, especially if a performance-minded student is making this trip. The GLI carries a 228-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo and is, right now, the only Volkswagen sold in the U.S. with an available six-speed manual. Worth holding in mind as a comparison while you're walking. Different car, different budget, same platform.
Stop 2: Downtown Greenville and Falls Park on the Reedy (plan 1.5 to 2 hours)
Fifteen minutes south, and you're on a completely different kind of walk. Falls Park sits at the heart of Downtown Greenville, with the Reedy River running through a gorge below the pedestrian Liberty Bridge. The loop runs about 20 minutes from the parking deck to the bridge and back. Pair it with lunch on Main Street and the afternoon doesn't feel rushed at all.

At 70.8 inches wide and 57.7 inches tall, it'll fit every standard deck in the area without the angled gymnastics a taller, wider vehicle sometimes requires.
Seasonal timing note: Fall foliage at Furman University's campus and in Downtown Greenville typically peaks in late October and into early November, per Visit Greenville SC. If you're chasing peak color, push your visit toward the last two weeks of October. A September visit still catches the start of the season, and it tends to come with lighter crowds on campus and at Falls Park.

If you're driving an out-of-town prospective student who wants to absorb the campus, cut Stop 3 from the itinerary and spend the extra hour on the lake loop and a quiet coffee near Furman. The campus sells itself.
If this is a parent-weekend visit and you've got a crew of four or five, look at the Volkswagen Tiguan instead. The Tiguan brings a third row of flexibility that genuinely matters when the student's roommate and their family end up joining the lunch plan, which happens. The Jetta seats five, but four adults with bags for a day trip is where the trunk of the Jetta starts feeling like a priority.
If the group skips the Downtown stop and heads directly out toward Paris Mountain State Park after Furman, the route stays easy. Paris Mountain sits about six miles from Downtown Greenville, and the 13-mile trail network there adds another dimension to the day for families who'd rather hike than browse Main Street. The Jetta takes that drive in stride.
